Learning Theory Approach to Design

How do you see these theories and approaches as fitting in to learning you will design?

What I have been doing with my high school students...

  • Constructivist, Cognitivist, Connectivist Theories (and some elements of Behaviorist and Andragogy)

  • Learner-Centered, Active Learning

  • Project-Based Learning

  • Formative and Summative Assessment

  • Scaffolding

  • Half Formal, Half Informal Learning

  • Skill Development

  • Collaboration

What I will change in the future for older teenagers and teacher development...

  • More Connectivist and Andragogy, less Behaviorism

  • Emphasizing Autonomy

  • Activating Intrinsic Motivation

  • Drawing on Experience

  • Experiential Learning

  • Gamification

  • Inquiry-Driven learning

  • Authentic assessments using digital tools/resources

Which theory or theories do you feel are most relevant and engaging for your learners and objectives? Why?

Constructivist - teaches learners to think like an historian, voter, group leader by gathering evidence to make generalizations that impact their perspective and decisions

Cognitivist - applies brain science to maximize engagement and recall, higher order thinking

Connectivist - connects Social Studies to real-world application, encourages learners to ask questions about sources and assumptions

Andragogy - older high school students will respond better to more autonomy and choice, drawing from experiences, and focusing assignments on real-world application

Do you think these theories/approaches work in conjunction with each other or in isolation from each other?  Explain.

I strongly believe that these theories and approaches work together, for example, high school students can construct meaning by connecting with experts in the field and a variety of primary sources. Utilizing cognition techniques can help them learn basic content more quickly in order to apply/transfer to real-world application that relates to them as young adults. The template below demonstrates my revised approach to planning and evaluating instruction based on my knowledge from my graduate education classes, my experience in the classroom, and new learning from this course.
